Sonakshi Sinha's upcoming film, 'System', marks a departure from her previous work in action and thriller genres, delving into the courtroom drama space. In an interview, she opens up about her connection to the character, Neha Rajvansh, and how a particular 'reverse nepotism' moment in the story resonates with her own life experiences.
The film, directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, follows Neha, a young public prosecutor who teams up with a court stenographer to tackle a murder case involving a powerful businessman. Sonakshi's portrayal of Neha, a woman from a renowned legal family striving to establish her own identity, is both relatable and emotionally charged.
What drew Sonakshi to the role was the character's depth and flaws, rather than the profession itself. She shared, "The relatability doesn't come from the profession she is in, but from the woman she is. She is very flawed, layered, and someone who makes her own mistakes and has her own demons. All these things are very relatable to me, and surely to a lot of other women as well, those who are trying to prove themselves and don't get things handed to them."
A pivotal moment in the film is when Neha's father, a celebrated defense lawyer, insists that she first establish herself independently as a prosecutor before joining the family practice. This leads to a humorous line in the movie where Neha asks, "What kind of reverse nepotism is this?"
Sonakshi admitted that this situation strongly echoes her own experiences growing up as the daughter of veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha. She recalled, "Honestly, that’s been the case with me. My father has always told me, ‘You have to prove yourself’. Because he was like that. It doesn’t matter who you are; you have to prove yourself to get ahead in life, and that’s how you get what you deserve. So that was also something that was very relatable."
Sonakshi's journey in Bollywood began with her debut opposite Salman Khan in 'Dabangg' in 2010, followed by commercial hits like 'Rowdy Rathore', 'Son of Sardaar', and 'Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty'. In recent years, she has garnered acclaim for her performances in streaming projects such as 'Dahaad' and 'Heeramandi'.
'System' is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on May 22, offering a unique blend of courtroom drama and personal struggles, reflecting Sonakshi's own experiences and her ability to connect with diverse audiences.
